About Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation describes darkened patches of skin caused by excess melanin. Common forms include post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation following acne or trauma, melasma triggered by hormonal and UV exposure, sun-induced lentigines, and drug-related pigmentation. UV is the most important driver and worsens nearly every type. Management starts with daily broad-spectrum sunscreen and gentle skin care, with topical agents such as hydroquinone, retinoids, azelaic acid, niacinamide, vitamin C, and tranexamic acid layered as appropriate; in-office chemical peels or lasers may help resistant cases.
