Pharyngitis is inflammation of the throat that causes pain, scratchiness, and difficulty swallowing. The majority of cases in adults are viral — including rhinovirus, influenza, COVID-19, and mononucleosis — and resolve in a few days with rest, fluids, lozenges, and over-the-counter analgesics. Group A streptococcal infection (“strep throat”) is the most important bacterial cause and warrants antibiotics to prevent rheumatic fever and reduce transmission. A rapid antigen test or culture distinguishes the two when clinical features (fever, tender lymph nodes, tonsillar exudate, no cough) suggest strep.
