About COVID-19
COVID-19 is a respiratory illness caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Presentations range from asymptomatic infection to fever, cough, sore throat, fatigue, body aches, headache, GI symptoms, and loss of taste or smell. Most cases are mild, but older adults and those with chronic conditions, immunocompromise, or pregnancy face higher risk of severe disease. Diagnosis is by antigen or PCR testing. Treatment is supportive for most; high-risk patients who test positive early may benefit from oral antiviral therapy such as nirmatrelvir/ritonavir. Long COVID can follow infection and warrants its own evaluation.
