About Asthma

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways that causes recurrent episodes of wheezing, cough, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. Triggers include allergens, viral infections, exercise, cold air, smoke, and stress. Inflammation makes the airways hyperreactive and prone to narrowing. Diagnosis combines history with spirometry showing reversible obstruction. Modern treatment centers on inhaled corticosteroids — typically combined with a long-acting bronchodilator — and a short-acting rescue inhaler for breakthrough symptoms. A written asthma action plan helps patients adjust therapy at the first sign of a flare.
