About Physical therapy referral
A physical therapy referral matches a musculoskeletal or neuromuscular problem with a structured rehabilitation program. PT is the foundation of treatment for most non-surgical low back and neck pain, tendinopathies, post-injury and post-surgical recovery, balance disorders, urinary incontinence, pelvic pain, and many neurologic conditions. Direct access laws in most U.S. states allow patients to start PT without a referral, but a referral often helps with insurance coverage and clarifies the prescribing diagnosis. Most courses involve 6–12 sessions and a home program.
