About Acne

Acne is a chronic inflammatory disease of the pilosebaceous unit, driven by excess sebum, follicular hyperkeratinization, Cutibacterium acnes colonization, and inflammation. It produces comedones, papules, pustules, nodules, and — when severe — scarring and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Treatment is matched to severity: topical retinoids and benzoyl peroxide for mild disease; topical or oral antibiotics combined with retinoids for moderate; hormonal therapy (combined oral contraceptives, spironolactone) for hormonal patterns; and isotretinoin for severe, scarring, or refractory acne under specialty supervision.
