About Bacterial vaginosis

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a shift in the vaginal microbiome away from protective lactobacilli toward anaerobic bacteria such as Gardnerella vaginalis. It typically produces a thin, gray-white discharge with a characteristic “fishy” odor, especially after intercourse, but many cases are asymptomatic. BV increases the risk of acquiring STIs and complicates pregnancy. Diagnosis is by Amsel criteria, Gram stain, or PCR. First-line treatment is oral or vaginal metronidazole or clindamycin; recurrence is common and may require longer or maintenance therapy.
