About Insomnia

Insomnia is difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking too early despite adequate opportunity for sleep, with daytime consequences such as fatigue, mood changes, and impaired concentration. Acute insomnia is usually triggered by stress, schedule changes, or illness. Chronic insomnia (≥3 nights per week for ≥3 months) often coexists with anxiety, depression, chronic pain, or sleep apnea. Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is the first-line treatment and outperforms sleep medications long-term; short courses of pharmacotherapy may be appropriate in selected cases.
