About Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism is an underactive thyroid gland that fails to produce enough thyroid hormone to meet the body's needs. Symptoms develop slowly and include fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, constipation, dry skin, hair thinning, and depressed mood. The most common cause in adults is Hashimoto's autoimmune thyroiditis. Diagnosis is made with a TSH and free T4. Treatment is once-daily levothyroxine, with doses titrated by repeat labs every 6–8 weeks until TSH normalizes; lifelong therapy is typical.
