About Drug allergy evaluation

Drug allergy refers to immune-mediated reactions to medications, ranging from mild rashes to severe, life-threatening responses such as anaphylaxis or Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Many self-reported drug “allergies” — especially to penicillin — are not true allergies, and removing the label after evaluation expands safe antibiotic options and improves outcomes. Evaluation reviews the original reaction, timing, and severity, and may include skin testing, graded challenges, or in-vitro tests for specific medications. Patients with true severe reactions must avoid the drug class and carry documentation.
