About Anxiety

Anxiety disorders are characterized by persistent, excessive worry or fear that is out of proportion to the situation and interferes with daily life. Generalized anxiety disorder involves chronic worry across multiple domains; other forms include panic disorder, social anxiety, and specific phobias. Physical symptoms often include muscle tension, restlessness, palpitations, GI upset, and sleep disturbance. Evidence-based treatment combines cognitive behavioral therapy with SSRIs or SNRIs as the first-line medication class; benzodiazepines have a limited role due to dependence and cognitive risks.
