About Depression

Major depressive disorder is a common, treatable condition marked by persistent low mood, loss of interest, changes in sleep, appetite, energy, and concentration, feelings of guilt or worthlessness, and sometimes thoughts of death or suicide. Episodes typically last weeks to months. Causes are multifactorial — genetic vulnerability, life stressors, medical illness, and neurochemistry all contribute. First-line treatment combines psychotherapy (especially CBT and interpersonal therapy) with SSRIs or SNRIs; symptoms improve gradually over 4–8 weeks, and ongoing treatment reduces relapse.
