About Gout

Gout is an inflammatory arthritis caused by uric acid crystals depositing in joints, most often the big toe, ankle, or knee. Attacks come on suddenly with severe pain, redness, warmth, and swelling, frequently overnight. Risk factors include genetics, kidney function, diuretics, alcohol, and diets high in purines and fructose. Untreated, repeated flares damage joints and can cause kidney stones. Acute attacks are treated with NSAIDs, colchicine, or steroids; long-term uric acid–lowering therapy with allopurinol or febuxostat prevents recurrence.
