About Melasma

Melasma is a common acquired pigmentary disorder that produces symmetric brown or gray-brown patches on the cheeks, forehead, upper lip, and chin. It is strongly linked to ultraviolet and visible light exposure, hormonal triggers (pregnancy, oral contraceptives), and genetic predisposition. It is often chronic and prone to recurrence. Cornerstone treatment is rigorous photoprotection with a tinted broad-spectrum sunscreen that blocks visible light, combined with topical hydroquinone, triple-combination creams, azelaic acid, or tranexamic acid; lasers and peels should be used cautiously to avoid rebound pigmentation.
