Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) occurs when stomach contents reflux into the esophagus often enough to cause symptoms or tissue damage. Typical symptoms include heartburn, regurgitation, chest discomfort, chronic cough, hoarseness, and disturbed sleep. Contributing factors are a weak lower esophageal sphincter, hiatal hernia, obesity, pregnancy, smoking, and certain foods. Management begins with weight loss, elevating the head of the bed, and avoiding late meals and known triggers, with H2 blockers or proton pump inhibitors added for symptom control. Persistent or alarm symptoms warrant endoscopy.
