Helicobacter pylori is a spiral bacterium that colonizes the stomach lining and is the leading cause of peptic ulcer disease and a major risk factor for gastric MALT lymphoma and gastric adenocarcinoma. Many infected people are asymptomatic. Testing — by urea breath test, stool antigen, or biopsy — is indicated for active or prior peptic ulcer, MALT lymphoma, dyspepsia, and selected high-risk situations. Treatment is multi-drug eradication regimens (commonly bismuth-based quadruple therapy or PPI-based clarithromycin triple therapy) followed by post-treatment confirmation of cure.
