Nephrologists manage diseases of the kidneys, including chronic and acute kidney disease, glomerular and tubular disorders, electrolyte and acid-base disturbances, complicated kidney stones, polycystic kidney disease, secondary and resistant hypertension, and dialysis. They prepare patients for renal replacement therapy — hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, or transplant — and follow transplant recipients in coordination with transplant teams. Early nephrology referral in chronic kidney disease slows progression and improves dialysis preparation.
