About Skin infection (cellulitis)

Cellulitis is a bacterial infection of the deeper layers of the skin and subcutaneous tissue, usually caused by streptococci or staphylococci entering through a break in the skin. It presents as an expanding area of warmth, redness, swelling, and tenderness, sometimes with fever. Risk factors include lymphedema, venous insufficiency, eczema, diabetes, and prior episodes. Uncomplicated cellulitis is treated with oral antibiotics covering streptococci; if purulence, abscess, or MRSA risk is present, coverage and possibly incision and drainage are needed. Worsening symptoms warrant urgent reassessment.
