Acute gastroenteritis is a usually viral infection of the GI tract that causes nausea, vomiting, watery diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and sometimes low-grade fever. Common viral causes include norovirus and rotavirus; bacterial causes (Salmonella, Campylobacter, E. coli, Shigella) more often produce bloody diarrhea or high fever. Most episodes are self-limited and resolve in 1–3 days. Treatment focuses on oral rehydration, gradual reintroduction of bland foods, and selective use of antiemetics; antibiotics are reserved for specific bacterial pathogens or severe illness. Signs of dehydration warrant urgent care.
