A gastroenteritis visit evaluates the duration, frequency, and character of vomiting and diarrhea, fluid intake, and dehydration risk. Most cases are viral and resolve in 1–3 days with oral rehydration and a bland diet; antiemetics such as ondansetron help patients tolerate fluids. Bloody diarrhea, high fever, severe abdominal pain, recent antibiotic exposure (C. difficile), travel history, and signs of dehydration change the work-up and may require stool testing or in-person care.
