A stye (external hordeolum) is an acute infection of an eyelid oil gland, usually caused by Staphylococcus aureus, producing a painful, red, tender bump along the lash line. Internal hordeolum involves a meibomian gland deeper in the lid. Most styes resolve within a week with warm compresses applied for 10–15 minutes several times daily and gentle lid hygiene. Topical antibiotic ointment is sometimes added when drainage occurs; persistent firm bumps are typically chalazia and may need referral for in-office incision or steroid injection.
