An ear infection visit triages otitis media — fluid and infection behind the eardrum — and otitis externa — infection of the external canal. Many cases of acute otitis media in children resolve without antibiotics; treatment is guided by age, severity, and laterality, with amoxicillin first-line. Otitis externa responds to topical antibiotic-steroid drops with canal hygiene.
