About Hair loss consultation
A hair loss consultation begins by identifying the pattern and timeline of shedding, which usually distinguishes androgenetic alopecia from telogen effluvium and patchy causes such as alopecia areata. Standard work-up includes TSH, ferritin, vitamin D, and selected hormonal labs in women; scalp examination distinguishes scarring from non-scarring forms. Evidence-based treatments for androgenetic alopecia include topical minoxidil, oral or topical finasteride or dutasteride, oral minoxidil at low doses, spironolactone in women, and adjuncts such as low-level laser therapy and platelet-rich plasma. Results take 4–6 months to assess.
