About Hair loss

Hair loss has many patterns and causes. Androgenetic alopecia, the most common, is hereditary and presents as gradual thinning along the part in women and a receding hairline and crown in men. Telogen effluvium is diffuse shedding triggered by illness, surgery, childbirth, weight loss, or thyroid and iron disorders. Patchy loss raises concern for alopecia areata. Evaluation includes a focused history, exam, and labs (TSH, ferritin, vitamin D). Treatments include minoxidil, finasteride or dutasteride, spironolactone in women, and platelet-rich plasma or low-level laser therapy as adjuncts.
