About PCOS

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder marked by irregular periods, elevated androgens, and often polycystic-appearing ovaries on ultrasound. It frequently presents with acne, excess hair growth, scalp hair thinning, weight gain, and difficulty conceiving. Insulin resistance plays a central role and contributes to long-term risk of type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Management is individualized: lifestyle changes, combined oral contraceptives for cycle and androgen control, metformin for metabolic features, and ovulation-induction agents such as letrozole when pregnancy is desired.
