About Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is infection of the upper female genital tract, usually arising from ascending sexually transmitted infections — Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Mycoplasma — often with anaerobic and other bacteria. Symptoms include lower abdominal pain, abnormal discharge, fever, dyspareunia, and intermenstrual bleeding. Untreated PID can lead to chronic pelvic pain, infertility, and ectopic pregnancy. Empiric outpatient treatment combines ceftriaxone, doxycycline, and metronidazole; severe disease, pregnancy, or tubo-ovarian abscess requires hospitalization and IV antibiotics with surgical consultation if needed.
