About Gonorrhea

Neisseria gonorrhoeae is a sexually transmitted bacterial infection that may infect the urethra, cervix, rectum, or pharynx. Many cases are asymptomatic; symptomatic disease causes purulent discharge, dysuria, or sore throat. Untreated gonorrhea contributes to PID, infertility, and disseminated infection. Because of widespread resistance, current first-line treatment is a single intramuscular dose of ceftriaxone, with doxycycline added when chlamydia coinfection has not been excluded. Partners should be treated and patients re-tested for reinfection in 3 months.
