About Genital herpes visit

A genital herpes visit confirms the diagnosis (PCR or culture preferred over serology), provides counseling about transmission and natural history, and prescribes antiviral therapy. Episodic treatment with valacyclovir, famciclovir, or acyclovir started at the first prodrome shortens outbreaks; daily suppressive therapy markedly reduces recurrences and transmission to partners and is recommended for frequent outbreaks, HSV-2 in a serodiscordant relationship, or significant psychological impact. Patients are counseled on disclosure, condom use, and asymptomatic shedding.
