About Chlamydia

Chlamydia trachomatis is the most commonly reported bacterial sexually transmitted infection. Most infections are asymptomatic, especially in women, which contributes to transmission and to complications such as pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, and ectopic pregnancy. When symptoms occur they include abnormal discharge, dysuria, post-coital bleeding, or testicular pain. Diagnosis is by nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT) of vaginal swab, urethral specimen, or urine. First-line treatment is doxycycline 100 mg twice daily for 7 days; partners must also be treated and a test of reinfection is recommended at 3 months.
