About Hashimoto's thyroiditis

Hashimoto's thyroiditis is a chronic autoimmune disease in which lymphocytic infiltration gradually destroys thyroid follicles, leading to hypothyroidism. It is the most common cause of hypothyroidism in iodine-sufficient areas and far more common in women. Many patients are asymptomatic for years and present only with elevated TSH on routine testing; others develop classic hypothyroid symptoms. Diagnosis combines TSH, free T4, and thyroid peroxidase (TPO) antibodies. Treatment of overt hypothyroidism is levothyroxine; subclinical disease is managed individually based on TSH level, antibody status, symptoms, and pregnancy plans.
