About Warts

Common warts are benign skin growths caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) infecting the epidermis. They appear as rough, raised, often hyperkeratotic lesions on the hands, fingers, feet (plantar warts), or face. Most warts in immunocompetent people resolve spontaneously over months to years, but treatment can speed clearance and reduce spread. Options include over-the-counter salicylic acid, cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen, and in resistant cases, intralesional immunotherapy or topical immunomodulators. Genital warts have different treatment considerations.
