About Menopause symptoms

Menopause is the cessation of menstrual periods for 12 consecutive months, marking the end of ovarian estrogen production, typically around age 51. The transition (perimenopause) can last years and produces hot flashes, night sweats, sleep disturbance, mood changes, vaginal dryness, painful sex, and accelerated bone loss. Treatment is individualized: systemic hormone therapy is the most effective option for vasomotor symptoms in appropriate candidates within 10 years of menopause; non-hormonal alternatives include SSRIs/SNRIs, gabapentin, and the new neurokinin-3 antagonist fezolinetant. Vaginal estrogen treats genitourinary symptoms locally and safely for most.
