About Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a disorder of gut–brain interaction that causes recurrent abdominal pain associated with changes in stool frequency or form, in the absence of structural disease. It is classified as IBS-D (diarrhea-predominant), IBS-C (constipation-predominant), or IBS-M (mixed). Triggers include certain foods, stress, hormonal cycles, and prior gastroenteritis. Evaluation rules out celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and other mimics. Treatment is individualized and may include a low-FODMAP trial, fiber adjustments, antispasmodics, neuromodulators, and targeted medications such as rifaximin or linaclotide.
