About Trichomoniasis

Trichomonas vaginalis is a sexually transmitted protozoal infection that causes vaginitis with frothy, malodorous discharge, itching, and dyspareunia in women; men are usually asymptomatic carriers. It is associated with increased risk of HIV acquisition and pregnancy complications. Diagnosis is by NAAT, which is more sensitive than wet mount. Treatment is oral metronidazole — 500 mg twice daily for 7 days in women, single 2 g dose acceptable in men. All sexual partners should be treated to prevent re-infection, and testing for other STIs is recommended.
