About Ureaplasma

Ureaplasma urealyticum and Ureaplasma parvum are small, cell-wall-deficient bacteria that colonize the genitourinary tract. They may cause non-gonococcal urethritis, cervicitis, and have been implicated in pregnancy complications, although colonization is common in asymptomatic individuals. Testing is by NAAT and is generally reserved for symptomatic patients in whom other causes have been excluded. Because Ureaplasma lacks a cell wall, beta-lactams are ineffective; doxycycline is first-line, with azithromycin or moxifloxacin as alternatives based on susceptibility and clinical context.
