About Mycoplasma genitalium

Mycoplasma genitalium is a sexually transmitted bacterial infection increasingly recognized as a cause of non-gonococcal urethritis in men and cervicitis, PID, and proctitis in women. Many infections are asymptomatic. Diagnosis is by NAAT, often with simultaneous testing for macrolide-resistance mutations because resistance is widespread. Recommended regimens use a resistance-guided approach with doxycycline followed by azithromycin or moxifloxacin. Partners should be treated, and re-testing is advised due to high failure rates with single-drug therapy.
