About Substance use concerns

Substance use disorders are chronic, treatable medical conditions in which continued use of alcohol or drugs causes significant impairment despite negative consequences. They exist on a spectrum from mild to severe and frequently coexist with mood, anxiety, and trauma-related disorders. Modern treatment is harm-reduction–oriented, evidence-based, and pairs behavioral interventions with FDA-approved medications when available — buprenorphine, methadone, or naltrexone for opioid use disorder; naltrexone or acamprosate for alcohol use disorder; nicotine replacement, varenicline, or bupropion for tobacco.
