About Eczema
Atopic dermatitis (eczema) is a chronic, relapsing inflammatory skin disease characterized by dry, itchy, inflamed skin and a disrupted skin barrier. It often begins in childhood and is closely associated with allergic rhinitis and asthma. Flares are triggered by irritants, allergens, stress, and infection. Daily management centers on bland emollients, gentle cleansing, and avoidance of triggers; flares are treated with topical corticosteroids or calcineurin inhibitors. Moderate-to-severe disease may warrant phototherapy or systemic therapy including dupilumab and JAK inhibitors.
