Keratosis pilaris causes small rough bumps, sometimes red or brown, on the backs of the upper arms, thighs and cheeks, giving a goose-bump or sandpaper feel. Keratin plugs the hair follicles; it is harmless, runs in families and is common with dry skin and eczema. It cannot be cured but often improves with regular moisturizers containing urea, lactic or salicylic acid, and sometimes a topical retinoid. Gentle skin care matters more than scrubbing, which can worsen redness.
