Painful lumps that keep returning in the armpits, groin or under the breasts may be hidradenitis suppurativa. A licensed clinician reviews your flares and treatments tried, and discusses a plan and dermatology referral when needed. Insurance or $50 self-pay.
A very painful swollen lump that may need drainage, spreading redness or fever needs in-person care.

Hidradenitis suppurativa is a chronic inflammatory skin condition causing painful lumps, abscess-like nodules and tunnels under the skin in the armpits, groin, buttocks and under the breasts. It is not caused by poor hygiene and often begins after puberty. Early treatment can reduce flares and scarring: options include antiseptic washes, topical clindamycin, oral antibiotics such as doxycycline, and hormonal treatments for some patients. Moderate to severe disease may need a dermatologist for biologic therapy or procedures, and a very painful fluctuant lump may need drainage in person.
