Intertrigo is a rash in skin folds, such as under the breasts, in the groin, armpits or belly folds, caused by moisture, heat and friction. The red, raw or macerated skin can become infected with yeast (candida) or bacteria, which may produce satellite spots, odor or oozing. Care focuses on keeping the folds dry and separated, barrier products, and treating any yeast or bacterial infection with an appropriate topical medicine. Recurrent fold rashes can be a clue to diabetes or other conditions worth reviewing.
