About HIV PrEP consultation

HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a daily medication that reduces the risk of acquiring HIV through sex by about 99% when taken as prescribed. Care includes a clinician evaluation and routine lab monitoring — HIV antigen/antibody testing, creatinine for kidney function, hepatitis B screening, and STI screening, with a pregnancy test where relevant — at a lab near you. Standard options are daily oral tenofovir/emtricitabine (generic Truvada) or tenofovir alafenamide/emtricitabine (Descovy), chosen on labs, bone and kidney considerations, and patient preference. Ongoing care includes an HIV test and check-in about every three months, with periodic kidney monitoring and STI screening. PrEP is appropriate for adults at ongoing risk; recent high-risk exposure within 72 hours instead calls for PEP, which is time-critical. Most commercial plans cover PrEP as preventive care.
