Impetigo is a contagious superficial skin infection, most common in children, that causes red sores that burst and form honey-colored crusts, often around the nose and mouth. It is caused by staph or strep bacteria and spreads through close contact and shared towels. Limited impetigo is usually treated with a prescription antibiotic ointment such as mupirocin; widespread infection may need oral antibiotics. Keeping sores covered, washing hands and not sharing towels helps prevent spread, and schools often ask that children start treatment before returning.
